So you probably know what your birth chart looks like. Do you ever wonder what all those lines mean? Those are aspect lines. While they can be hard to read on the circular chart, most online astrology tools can show you an aspects table. So what the heck does it mean?
Astrological aspects refer to the way the planets are aligned in your birth chart. The planets form different angles, which are called aspects.
Astrology Aspects Defined
You may be wondering, “what are astrology aspects?” Astrological aspects are the angles formed by the planets in your birth chart. Each planet rules a different part of your life. Some planets in your birth chart work well together. Other planets will have conflicting energies.
When you know the aspects of your birth chart, you gain more insight on yourself. The aspects tell you about your emotional responses, communication style, and even unknown talents.
Five Types of Aspects
Astrological aspects come in five different types. Planets can be in Conjunction, Opposition, Trine, Square, or Sextile. Here’s what each of those means.
Conjunction
Conjunction occurs when two planets occupy the same sign. On the aspect table, the Conjunction symbol is a little empty circle with a diagonal line coming out of it.
Conjunction can be good or bad. If the planets in conjunction have energies that work well together, like the Sun and Mercury, it's good. This person likely has an easy time communicating. Sometimes the planets have conflicting energies, like Jupter and Staurn. In that case, the conjunction presents a challenge.
Opposition
The aspect of Opposition happens when planets are 180 degrees away from each other. On the aspect table, Opposition is indicated by a line with two circles on either end. The aspect points to areas of your life with conflicting needs. For example, a person with a moon in Opposition to their ascendant can be easily influenced by others.
It can be a challenge to find harmony with an Opposition. Opposition reminds us to embrace polarity. It’s also good to know your natural weaknesses.
Trine
Trine aspects are harmonious and auspicious. The symbol for a Trine is a triangle. A Trine occurs when two planets are 120 degrees away from each other. Since they occur at 120 degrees, most Trines have the same astrological element.
Trines show where one experiences ease in life. For example, a person whose Venus is in Trine with Mars will naturally act in prosocial ways. They will have an easy time making friends, and friend groups will naturally form around them.
Trines show you your natural abilities.
Square
Squares indicate areas of life in which you struggle. The symbol for a square is a square shape. Just like the shape, the Square aspect occurs when planets are 90 degrees away from each other. The energy between two square plants is one of conflict. Think of two boxers "squaring off."
This isn't necessarily a bad thing. A lot of people with squares in their chart find inspiration from their internal conflict. Squares are hard to work with in youth, but can often lead to great skills as an adult.
Squares show your natural challenges in life.
Sextile
Sextile aspects happen when planets are 60 degrees away from each other. On the aspect table, the symbol for a Sextile is an asterix. They give the planet a harmonious relationship. They aren't quite as obvious as the Trines.
Sextiles point to hidden talents. These are things you can develop, but you need to be aware of them and work on those skills. Pay attention to your Sextile aspects, you don't want to miss out on your hidden talents.
What Do Astrological Aspects Mean?
So we’ve gone over what these aspects mean, but what do they mean for you specifically? The answer is, it’s complicated!
By the way, this gets a little more complicated if you include your Vedic Chart. Since Vedic astrology uses a different center measuring point, your aspects will be different on the different charts.
The easiest and most accurate way to make sense of all of this is to go to a professional astrologer. They can look at your aspect table and give you detailed answers on what it all means.
